Foot Orthoses

What are Orthotics?

Foot Orthoses or ‘Orthotics’ are a great treatment tool for many lower limb conditions and presentations. The aim of an orthotic device is to assist the way you move – walk or run – to reduce excess load on the affected part of your body.

What types of Foot Orthoses are there?

There are many different types of Orthoses out there. They can vary in materials depending on the individual’s activity levels and pathology or the type of footwear a person might be using. Commonly, Foot Orthoses can be broken into 3 subgroups:

  • Custom
  • Semi-Custom
  • Off the shelf

Why might you need foot orthoses?

Foot Orthoses are only ever used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. The use of orthotic devices can be to reduce or shift load away from painful tissues or high load areas that may breakdown e.g. diabetic foot or rheumatoid foot populations.

In prescribing foot orthoses, our Podiatrist will take into consideration the following to achieve the ideal response for you:

  • Joint range and quality of movement
  • Injury history
  • Strength and flexibility
  • The axis and position of your joints
  • Day-to-day or competitive activities

Orthoses can be used in the treatment of:

  • Heel and arch pain
  • Plantar Fasciopathy (Plantar Fasciitis)
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Knee pain
  • Forefoot pain
  • Persistent corns or callus
  • Diabetic foot issue
  • Discomfort wearing ski boots/cycling shoes

The best option is to book in with an expert Errol Street Podiatrist to collaborate on a plan and discover whether an orthotic device will be appropriate for you.
